What to Expect on Your First Visit
If you are a new patient, please click links below to download the New Patient Package. There are three forms that that need to be filled out and either sent to our office ahead of time or brought with you when you come for your first visit. Having these forms already completed will save you time and allow us to concentrate on your immediate concerns. The rest of the package will give you more information about our office.
During your first office visit, the practitioner will ask you additional questions about your health condition, lifestyle, and behavior. Having your complete history and reviewing all current symptoms is the first of four steps in diagnosis for Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Your practitioner will give you a complete and thorough evaluation. Simple things like listening to the sound of the patient’s voice and detecting any breath or body odors can be key to a diagnosis. Additionally, the practitioner notes the color of the patient’s complexion, and shape, color and coating on the tongue to confirm the findings in the history and symptom review. Palpation of the patient’s pulse and accupoints will give further confirmation of the locations, pathogenic factors, and treatment methods appropriate for each individual case. Environmental conditions such as wind, heat, dampness, and dryness must be considered as well. From this information, the practitioner will be able to create a prescription of dietary changes and therapeutic foods, herbal medicines, and acupuncture treatments based on the patient’s unique condition.
This initial exam will generally take about one hour to one hour and a half, so please allow us ample time to determine the best treatment for your particular needs. If acupuncture is recommended, additional time will be needed. Allow around an hour for follow-up visits, if they are needed.
